Introduction

ARP spoofing, also called ARP Cache poisoning, is one of the hacking methods to spoof the contents of an ARP table on a remote computer on the LAN. Two addresses are needed for one computer to connect to other computer on an IP/Ether network. One address is the MAC address; the other is the IP address. A MAC address is used on a local area network before packets go out of the gateway; an IP address is used to surf the Internet through a gateway. There is a protocol that asks "who has this MAC address" and answers the question; that is called ARP (Address Resolution Protocol).

What the ARP asks the target address for sending is called the ARP Request or ARP who has, and the ARP that responds to the request is called the ARP Request or ARP who has. Although wrong information is inserted into ARP, the computer believes that the information of the ARP is valid and saves the information in own ARP table for a while. This is ARP spoofing.

Using ARPSpoof with WFilter Enterprise

To monitor all Internet traffic with WFilter, the machine with WFilter installed shall be connected to a broadcasted hub or the mirror port of a switch and all Internet traffic passes through this broadcasted hub or switch.

If you do not have a broadcasted hub or port mirror switch, you may use our ARPSpoof tool instead. However, ARPSpoof is a tool help to demostrate WFilter and we recommend you deploy a broadcasted hub or a port mirror switch for long term use.

  • 1. Install WFilter Enterprise.
  • 2. Install ARPSpoof.
  • 3. Open ARPSpoof, choose machines you want to monitor and click "Start ARP Spoof".
  • 4. Open WFilter console, set "Mode" to "By IP Address" in "Monitor Settings".
  • 5. Back to "Online Computers" and enjoy it.

Note

  • 1. You need to restart you computer on the first time installation of ARPSpoof.
  • 2. WFilter shall be set to "By IP Address" mode when using ARPSpoof.
